3 Simple Ways to Maintain Your Watch

Watches are timeless pieces that preserve the craftsmanship of their designer. Usually, because of their value, watches are not just seen as a functional timekeeping tool. They’re also considered a valuable investment. Regardless of the watch’s brand, it is best to ensure that these pieces last for years.

Whether an avid collector or someone who just owns a few timepieces, proper watch maintenance is still important to ensure longevity. Here are 3 simple and effective tips to care for watches.

1. Ensure that you’re regularly cleaning your watch

Regular watch cleaning is important because it can bring back the shine. Even the most opulent watch might eventually get dull from wear and tear. If a watch is used every day, it will need more cleaning. Sweat, dirt, and dust can collect on the watch, particularly on the face and strap. Occasionally used watches, on the other hand, only need a gentle cleaning and professional servicing every 3-5 years.

Tips for cleaning a watch

Regular watch maintenance is simple, however, there are still dos and don’ts that need to be followed. Watch owners can follow these tips when cleaning their watches.

  • Make sure to check the watch water resistance rating before trying to submerge it in cleaning solution

  • Don’t use harsh cleaning agents. Instead, use mild soap/cleaning solutions for watches when cleaning

  • Refrain from using harsh brushes and cloths that could scratch the watch

  • Before assembling, make sure that all the components of the watch are fully dried

2. Make sure that you store your watch properly

When not in use, one shouldn’t just leave a watch out. Watches should be stored properly to protect them from harsh environments that can damage them. It could also ensure that the watch is kept safe when these storage best practices are followed:

  • Putting the watch in a tray

  • Placing the watch inside a box

  • Storing the watch in a soft pouch

  • Placing the watch in a jewellery drawer

  • Storing the watch in a safe

  • Avoiding placing it near magnetic items

  • Removing the batteries if watches will be stored for a longer period of time

3. Schedule professional servicing for your watch

There are instances where regular cleaning and proper storage are not enough to maintain a watch. When the functionality of a watch diminishes from wear and tear, it might need to be checked by a professional watchmaker.

There are also signs that can be noticed if the watch already needs servicing. This can be the following:

  • When a watch is gaining or losing time

  • When there is a new or weird noise that is coming out of it

  • When vapour starts forming under the crystal

  • When the watch doesn’t function properly

Keep your watches looking sharp for years

Proper care is an investment and an integral part of keeping watches flawless. By regular cleaning, proper storage, and professional watchmaker consultation, one can ensure that their watches remain intact and functional. Not only that, but all these tips can help in making sure each timepiece retains its beauty and value over time.
